Aggie walked alongside Jake as they strolled through the campus with its mixture of new and old buildings. It truly was a welcoming, pleasant place. Since it was such a pleasant evening, many students were outside, sitting on benches or laughing with friends.
Aggie felt a pang of envy. If only her life had been different. She’d have memories of doing the very same thing, but money and circumstance stole her options away from her when she’d chosen to stay put and not follow her parents to the next base. Escaping her stepfather’s tyranny had been worth it despite her occasional regrets. He wouldn’t have paid for her college anyway. He didn’t believe in giving her anything. She had to earn it. His philosophy wasn’t bad except—as in all things—he took it to an extreme, never giving her anything. As a child, she was dressed in thrift-shop clothes, not because they didn’t have the money but because he refused to spend it on her.
Her mother had been the dutiful army wife, never making waves and following his regimented schedule without complaint. Aggie did, too, and she badly wanted him to be her father and show her some love. When she realized all she’d get from him was contempt, she rebelled and became the child from hell.
If he made a rule, she broke it. Case in point, changing her hair color, which irritated him to no end. Her curfew. She stayed out all night. He was thrilled when she suggested staying with a friend rather than moving with them. In truth, she’d hoped they’d insist she go with them because they cared. Obviously, they didn’t.
Jake surprised her by reaching over and grabbing her hand. “You’re quiet.”
“Sorry, college campuses make me melancholy.” She pursed her lips and didn’t expound upon her words. “How about you?”
“Me?” He chuckled from deep in his throat, a very sexy sound that sent a shiver of desire down her body. She wanted him, and she wondered if he wanted her.
“Yes, you. I bet you were the big man on campus.”
“Not exactly. That was Tanner.”
“Of course.”
“But as his wingman, I did reap the benefits. After all, he had more than he could handle, so he sent the ladies my way.”
“I see.”
“Yeah, but I was never much of a partier. I was serious, driven, determined to get ahead in life. I wanted to be the first person in my family to graduate from college.”
She mulled over the revealing little tidbit he’d tossed her way. His family must’ve been poor.
When she didn’t respond, he continued. “As the oldest, I wanted to make sure my family could be taken care of, given perks I didn’t have. So, yeah, college wasn’t one party after another. It was lots of hard work on and off the field. Football didn’t come easy to me like it did to Tanner. I had to pour every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears I possessed into it, then I’d study my ass off half the night.
